Impact101: 4. Breaking Free from Conventional Paradigms
Impact101 projects focus on tangible, measurable outcomes and require a shift from traditional thinking. Companies can achieve significant change and measurable gains by overcoming conventional paradigms, introducing rapid-cycle projects, and partnering across boundaries.

Introduction
All around the globe, in every organisation, and especially in mining, there's a world of opportunity just waiting to be tapped into. We're talking about making real, impactful strides that boost the bottom line and strengthen our approach to getting things done.

The drive behind Impact101 projects
Embarking on 100-day Impact101 projects is no academic exercise; it's a reaction to genuine needs and frustrations. Consider areas where patience is wearing thin - it may be slow commissioning, lagging production, or overdue organisational changes. That's where Impact101 jumps in.

Breaking free from the usual
The biggest challenge? Shaking off old habits and norms. Introducing these rapid-cycle projects is our secret weapon for fast-tracking improvement. Despite some doubts about the power of small-scale initiatives, Impact101 delivers quick wins that lay the groundwork for broader success.

Implementation: the key to strategic advantage
Experts are unanimous: implementation is crucial. It's not just another piece of the puzzle; it's what gives operations their edge. Operational innovation is more reliable, cost-effective, and entirely under management's control. Resistance to change an issue? No problem; people support what they create.

Tackling change barriers with solid leadership
Change is challenging; there are always barriers. A big one? Leadership often undervalues operations, seeing them as mundane or unexciting. To turn this around, leaders must recognise the true potential of operations and champion change. Usually, the real game-changers are the ones working closest to the action.

The thrill of accountability
Impact101 is a dynamic way to score quick, significant wins. It's about leaders stepping up, setting solid goals, and rallying their teams to figure out the best path forward. Sure, there will be hurdles, but the thrill and rewards of leading a successful project with ambitious goals are unmatched. It is arguably the best way to develop future leaders. In a future blog post, we will explore this issue in depth.

Three ways to start your Impact101 journey
Ready to jump into Impact101? Here are three pathways:

1. Performance improvement projects:
These are all about gradual enhancements, setting you up for bigger wins down the road.

2. Process redesign projects:
Here, we're looking at a large-scale overhaul of business processes, focusing on isolated elements for quick, measurable improvements.

3. Model week (or model month) projects:
We have found that when individuals come together to work towards an extremely challenging goal for a brief period, they can achieve extraordinary performance levels. Once they succeed, they readily accept even higher standards as the new normal.

Adopting a rapid-cycle mindset means looking at goals differently, focusing on tangible results like cost cuts, efficiency boosts, and faster cycles. Soon, carving out result-oriented projects becomes second nature.

Partnering across boundaries for success
When collaboration is vital, cross-boundary projects are your go-to. These involve diverse groups within an organisation and can extend to contractors and suppliers, leading to immediate improvements and stronger relationships.

I was part of a project where the Site Manager of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of all the pumps on a large precious metal concentrator was appointed as the project team leader. In previous Impact101 projects, affected contractors and suppliers were involved as team members. However, we trusted the charismatic and driven OEM Site Manager to lead this time. We faced a severe issue with pump breakdowns and excessive Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). The overall availability of the plant was suffering as a result. By adhering to the Impact101 project principles, we collaborated with the OEM, and the results were remarkable. What could have been a significant breach of contract based on performance, leading to substantial production disruptions, poor plant availability, and consequential loss in production and revenue, was turned into an achievement never accomplished. After the project's successful conclusion, the global CEO of the OEM company honoured the site as the best in the world.

Attaining 'hard' results in 'soft' areas
The results-focused approach isn't limited to hard business dimensions; it equally excels in achieving measurable gains in soft areas. These include worker health and safety, employee diversity, organisational culture, corporate image, communications, and employee satisfaction.

But why are hard results so elusive in soft areas? One reason that results are difficult to achieve is the same underdevelopment of implementation capability that plagues improvement initiatives in other performance areas. Soft areas are more difficult to define and are even less amenable to big-fix, top-down solutions.

Building a culture of execution
With each successful project, a culture of getting things done takes root. People get better at meeting both short-term and long-term goals, creating a capable and driven workforce.

The rewards outweigh the effort
As a manager, your job is to make things better. Well, Impact101 projects can help you do just that! These projects are all about taking quick action to make real improvements. And the best part? You'll learn a ton along the way! You'll improve at setting goals, motivating your team, creating winning strategies, overcoming obstacles, and managing projects like a boss. Plus, you'll finally be able to say goodbye to those annoying dysfunctional habits and endless planning sessions. So, what are you waiting for? Let's get started on your next Impact101 project!
